Let’s face it.  All automotive service areas (and most waiting areas for this matter) all have televisions for their customer’s viewing pleasure.  Most of these just have regular local programming, cable news shows, ESPN or cooking shows on to entertain the people that are waiting.  This is common and seems to be an “out of sight out of mind” piece of the store’s environment that management doesn’t seem to think much about.  Here is a question for you….Are you alienating your customers?

Let’s think through this for a moment.  If you are playing CNN or Fox News, assume that half of your viewing customers are going to have a negative feeling of you.  You did absolutely nothing but select a channel and turn a screen on.  In this day and age, you should not be held accountable for this.  But these are not normal times.

Content that you expose your clients to contributes to how they view you.  In light of this, the technology exists today that allows any television screen to be turned into a custom television channel.  A business can now completely control what messaging is shown to their customers, taking away the risk of turning on that screen and broadcasting content that your customers may find offensive.

Knowing that the technology exists, now what?  This is a question that faces the businesses that want to control the content and messaging that their customers see.  There are many options that are available, but here are a few things to consider:

1.        Do you have a team that can do this internally or are you looking to bring in a company to execute?

2.       What messaging do you want to broadcast?  Sales content?  Branding content?

3.       What price is it worth to you to keep your customers satisfied with your CONTENT?

As you ponder the above, the management question that you need to answer and build upon Is what do you customers WANT and do you want a customer to be happy…or alienated by what you broadcast?
